Raspberry Pi 3 Mpeg2 License Key Generator

Feb 21, 2016  You can get two licence keys for the Pi, MPEG-2 and VC-1. MPEG-2 is often used by live TV, DVDs and Blu-Rays VC-1 is often used by Blu-Rays. You can tell the codec in use using the codec overlay ('o' key on keyboard) or by posting a debug log (wiki). But it's certainly possible that the lack of MPEG-2 licence may be causing your live TV issues. Mar 13, 2013 An MPEG-2 ($4)and/or VC-1 license($2) purchased from the Raspberry Pi store. Access to the command prompt on the Raspberry Pi (either at the physical device or via SSH). First, we will walk you through getting the serial number off the board and purchasing the licenses you need. Hardware decoding of additional codecs on the Pi 3 and earlier models can be enabled by purchasing a licence that is locked to the CPU serial number of your Raspberry Pi. On the Raspberry Pi 4, the hardware codecs for MPEG2 or VC1 are permanently disabled and cannot be enabled even with a licence key; on the Pi 4, thanks to its increased processing power compared to earlier models, MPEG2 and VC1 can be.

Can anyone advise me how to put the mpeg2 license key into the config files please? Can this be done via windows network possibly? I am only running OpenElec now on the PI2.
I also winder if this key is actually required when running a Home Run PVR as the backend.
I cannot seem to decode HD channels only SD at this point and assumed this maybe my issue
Thanks

Yes, insert sdcard into windows.
You should see a file called config.txt.
At end of file paste in the numbers in the email. E.g.
decode_MPG2=0x12345678
decode_WVC1=0x87654321

I only purchased the one code MPEG2. Is the other a required code too?
Do you think this is why I am having HD issues?
Thanks for the quick reply Popcornmix. You do so much!

If you don't play Blu-Ray images then you shouldn't need the VC-1 codec.

Still cannot figure out how to get or add a config file from windows. I also have no idea how to use SSH to accomplish it either.

It's hard to help when you give such confusing information - you say you've installed only OpenELEC but you can't find config.txt (which is installed by default with OpenELEC), and now you've got this 'Raspbian' folder... have you installed NOOBS by any chance?

I was finally able to get SSH to work and enter the license key. The video is much better than before but still having freezing after a few seconds of HD video. I did overclock to high to see if that helps but same result.Thank you for the help. I am back to see if the next Milhouse build may help.

I am using OpenElec but viewing it from a windows based computer Milhouse As I have seen online at times the config.txt file may not be visible via windows. So I did find it using SSH since on the card itself is was not visible a a stand alone. Thank you for your help and patience.

It seems now after further testing my SD video is pixelating and freezing up as well just like my HD is. This is live TV using HD Home run pvr. So I would think the license is not the real issue.
